Cryptococcus neoforman (Cryptococcus)
General Information
Cryptococcus is a fungi infection of worldwide distribtion caused by the yeast Cryptococcus neoforman that can be found in soil and bird droppings. The respiratory tract is the primal portal of entry with dissemination and spread to the central nervous system. Especially common in immunocomprimised patients. The pulinary infection is asymptomatic in up to 1/3 of patients. In symptomatic cases patient can present with cough, chest pain, mucoid sputum, weight loss and fever

Cytology
Fungi measures 5-20 um
Thick mucoid capsule (can vary in thickness)
Single narrow “teardrop” shaped budding
Granulomatous inflammation in background
Yeasts can be seen in macrophages
