Dr. Sobczak obtained her BSN from Fitchburg State College in Fitchburg, MA, her MSN in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, her PhD from the Medical College of Georgia, a post doctoral fellowship at the University of Washington’s Department of Psychosocial and Community Health Nursing, and a Post Master’s Certificate as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at SUNY Stonybrook. She is ANCC certified as a Family Psychiatric Mental Health NP as well as an Adult Psychiatric Mental Health CNS. In addition to coordinating the Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program at Upstate Medical University College of Nursing, Dr. Sobczak maintains a private practice in North Syracuse.

Course Objectives

Following this program the participant will be able to:

  1. Correlate neuroanatomy and neurophysiology with psychopharmacology and psychotropic drugs.
  2. Discuss the general principles of prescribing psychotropic medications to adult clients, including related ethical and legal issues.
  3. Describe indications, targeted effects, drug interactions, side effects and potential adverse effects of common psychotropics, including:
    • Antipsychotics
    • Antidepressants
    • Mood stabilizing agents
    • Anxiolytics
    • Cognitive enhancers
  4. Explain current protocols for the treatment of common mental health conditions such as mood disorders, anxiety disorders and disorders of impulse control.
