Nursing Case Management
A course for nurses and other professionals who work directly with patients and coordinate their healthcare activities

Course Dates
- Spring 2010: This course will meet Tuesday evenings
throughout the Spring 2010 semester, beginning January
4 through April 21 2010.
- Fall 2010: This course will meet Tuesday evenings
throughout the Fall 2010 semester, beginning August 24
through December 7, 2010.
Day/Time
The course can be taken in either the Fall or Spring
semester and meets on Tuesdays 4:30 to 7:20 p.m.
Credits & Cost
3 Credit Hours
Also qualifies for 45 CMSA or ANA continuing education
credits at no extra charge to student.
The cost of the 3-credit course is based on the
SUNY master’s level rate – currently $349 per credit
hour. This course is eligible for employer and union
tuition reimbursement plans.

Faculty: Louise Pernisi RN, MS, CNS, CCM, CDMS 
Ms. Pernisi has a BS in Nursing from SUNY Buffalo, and
an MS in Nursing with a Minor in Education from SUNY
Upstate Medical University. She served in the United
States Army Nurse Corps and has clinical experience in
orthopedics, emergency room and intensive care nursing.
She has over 13 years experience as a medical case
manager, with certifications as a CCM (Certified Case
Manager) and CDMS (Certified Disability Management
Specialist). She is a medical case manager for the
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation inpatient
catastrophic injury program at SUNY Upstate.

Program Description
This 3-credit course introduces the student to the role of
the professional nurse as case manager. The history, role
and standards of case management will be examined.
Practice issues including case management process,
models of care, functions and practice settings are
emphasized. An overview of legal and ethical issues
impacting case management will be addressed. The
major insurance types will be analyzed for their impact
on clinical practice. Contemporary topics related
to case management such as utilization review and
national certification options are discussed as well.
Content is suitable as a review for national certification exams.
At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Discuss the history and standards of practice for the case manager role.
- Describe the process of case management assessment.
- Describe the models of case management practice.
- Examine the roles and functions of the case manager in the healthcare setting.
- Discuss the legal and ethical issues related to the case manager role.
- Analyze the major insurance types and their impact on case manager practice.
- Describe the process of case manager utilization review.
- Explore the case manager organizations, and their guidelines for obtaining national certification.
- Interpret the professional case management role including best practices, professional accountability and the importance of communication.

The course is designed for nurses currently practicing
as a case manager or those interested in doing so.
Content is also suitable for social workers,
vocational counselors and other
professionals who practice as case managers.
