My name is Nicole and I have struggled to lose weight for almost my entire life. As long as I can remember I was always the heaviest girl in my class. I weighed 103 pounds in 3rd grade at just eight and a half years old.

My mother had also struggled with her weight but only after having three children. We dieted on and off throughout the years. It was the typical, frustrating story... lose 20 pounds, gain 30 back. After having my two children I struggled even more with my weight. I packed on 60 pounds in 6 years and my weight was going nowhere... no where, but up.

A family friend had gastric bypass surgery at University Hospital and was such an inspiration. My mother began looking into having surgery only to discover she was not eligible due to being 65 years old.

When I was pursuing having surgery at University Hospital my mother told me "If I were you, Niki, I'd have that surgery in a heartbeat." When I asked, "Really?" she replied, "Yes, so you don't have to struggle your whole life with your weight like I have." My mother passed away just one month after saying that to me... it was at that point that I embarked upon making the best decision I have ever made in my life!

Being a nurse, I researched the benefits and risks of having gastric bypass surgery.I went into surgery after being carefully followed by the Bariatric Surgery Center for nearly 5 months. I knew after meeting Dr. Kim and the staff that I was making the right decision, for the right reasons... my two sons, who at that time were ages 4 and 6.

On November 27, 2006, I had Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery without complications and with phenomenal results!

Over a year has passed and I feel absolutely great. I have so much more energy and spend a lot more time outside playing with my sons and exercising with our very energetic dog too. I feel blessed and acknowledge that gastric bypass surgery is only the beginning of the long road to healthiness. Every day I have to make healthy food choices and know my limits. These choices in conjunction with exercise are the keys to my successful weight loss of 120 pounds. I am so grateful to the Bariatric Surgery Center. Time is a precious commodity that no one has the luxury to waste.
