Supportive Learning Environment

career advisory dinner

We care about our students. We acknowledge the pressures of Medical School, and our students' desire to become the best physicians they can be. Here are just a few things SUNY Upstate does to help our students reach their goals:

  • Each student is assigned an advisory dean, who follows the student's academic progress and overall well-being.
  • Lectures are recorded on streaming video and downloaded to each student's personal computer; lecture notes are provided in a binder, and major exams are preceded by a day off.
  • Our alumni donate an Anatomy textbook to each first-year student.

The university also provides free counseling, and has an active Multicultural Affairs Office and International Student Association. Our students help each other as well—each first-year student is paired with a second-year "big sibling" for informal guidance. Student-generated web sites keep classmates informed about social outings, study sessions, major deadlines and free lunches on campus.

"You spend so much time in these buildings, with these people, it comes down to the kind of people you want to be around. Faculty who come in on weekends to make sure students know the material, that's what sets this place apart. That's their nature. They're just wonderful people. The academic and personal support allows you to get through med school."
