Year Two: Human Disease and Treatment

physician and med studentThe second year focuses on understanding the mechanisms and pharmacologic treatment of disease, and further developing clinical and professional skills.

Three concurrent courses —Pathology, Medical Literature Curriculum II: Pathophysiologic Mechanisms of Disease and Pharmacology—look at the mechanism of disease, the presentation of disease and the drug treatment of disease. Lectures are complemented by labs, case study seminars, problem-solving sessions, computer-assisted learning, autopsy work-ups and phlebotomy.

Practice of Medicine continues from the first year. Students further develop communication and physical exam skills under the supervision of primary care physicians working with real and simulated patients in small groups, preceptors’ offices, clinics and hospitals. Radiology sessions together with labs and problem-solving experiences help students develop diagnostic and clinical reasoning skills. During Patient-Partners teaching sessions, arthritis patients trained by the Arthritis Foundation help students understand and diagnose the disease.

Microbiology and Immunology covers infection and immunity and could be renamed: Bacteria, Viruses and Prions: The Agents of Infection and the Body's Response. This course includes discussion of emerging infections such as the West Nile Virus.

Behavioral Science looks at human development and behavior, psychopathology and treatment options.
