Curriculum

Third Year

The third year curriculum consists of 44 weeks of required clinical experiences. Students rotate through clinical clerkships: Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Neuroscience, Ambulatory Surgery (one week each in Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology), and Psychiatry. Prevention and Radiology are integrated throughout the third year curriculum. The required Primary Care and Practice of Medicine III Programs are offered concurrently with the other third year clerkships.

The Binghamton Campus curriculum blends innovative teaching and clinical learning with traditional clerkships and electives to provide a rigorous background in medical education for third and fourth year medical students.

Students designated for the Binghamton Campus ( See Selection of Students for the Binghamton Campus) move to the Binghamton area after completing their first two years (See Curriculum Years One and Two) at the Syracuse campus of Upstate Medical University.

The Primary Care Program is the cornerstone of the Binghamton Campus curriculum. This unique longitudinal rotation offers a year-long mentorship with a family physician. Also included are didactic activities that explore the physician-patient relationship and introduce concepts in assessment and management of common problems that bring people to their family physicians.

The Geriatric Medicine Program, a four-week clerkship, addresses causes, management, and prevention of later life diseases. This program emphasizes training in care of older adults in community, home, and institutional settings. Promotion of positive attitudes, examination of available support systems, and clinical work at community and long-term care facilities are combined in an integrated approach to health care of the elderly.

The Practice of Medicine III Program is presented concurrently with the major clerkships in the third year. Students discuss ethical and professional issues, and they practice communication skills in developing better patient-doctor relationships.

Clinical Skills Assessment

Fourth Year

The fourth year program includes one required clerkship, Gerontology/Geriatric Medicine. For the remainder of the fourth year, medical students select electives. A minimum of 27 elective credits is required for graduation. A full complement of electives is offered throughout the Upstate Medical University system. Students may choose from any of the offerings, regardless of the campus they are assigned for clinical training. As part of the elective requirement, 4 credits of the 27 required must come from approved Basic Science Selectives. The Basic Science Selectives are designed to reinforce the basic science underlying the practice of medicine. Basic science selectives are offered in a variety of areas (e.g., clinical pharmacology, physiology of the heart, special dissections, pathology, etc.). Students at the Binghamton Campus are also eligible for the Rural Medical Education Program.
