Donna R. Bacchi, MD, MPH

Donna Bacchi, MD, MPH, is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Chair of the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and Director of the Central New York Master of Public Health program. She is also the Medical Director of Maternal and Child Health with the Onondaga County Health Department.

Dr. Bacchi has spent her career on improving the health and development of children. This includes working in a community and migrant health center in Texas and for the US Public Health Service in Maryland; starting a mobile-based health care system for homeless children in Dallas; and overseeing a school-based health program in East Austin. She also started the Reach Out and Read early literacy program at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. Bacchi directed the Center for Tobacco Prevention and Control, which was instrumental in establishing smoke-free public places and youth access ordinances in Lubbock, Texas. Her research focused on reducing secondhand smoke exposure for children and reducing tobacco use among college students.

A board certified pediatrician, she received her bachelor's degree from Cornell University, a medical degree from University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and a Masters of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins University. She completed her pediatric residency and assistant chief residency at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She served as a member of the National Health Service Corps and was assistant medical director and a practicing pediatrician at the Brownsville Community Health Center in the lower Rio Grande Valley.

Bacchi has served on numerous national, state and local boards, including President of the American Heart Association Texas Affiliate, national board member of the Americans for Non-Smokers'Rights, on the national advisory committee for McGraw Hill publishers, and as chair of the United Way Success by Six Initiative in Lubbock. She has been invited to speak throughout the nation on a variety of health issues and has been a regular guest on SUNY Upstateā€™s Health Link on Air radio program.

Since coming to SUNY Upstate in 2006, Dr. Bacchi has been involved in teaching residents and medical students in clinical pediatric settings. She lectures on a variety of general pediatric issues, including literacy, child advocacy, tobacco prevention and control, obesity, public health and nutrition, and is teaching several graduate courses in the CNYMPH program. She is also active on several university-wide committees.
