Credit Changes from the AMA
In October, the American Medical Association CME Advisory Committee (CMEAC) approved several recommendations that were then reviewed and approved by the AMA Council on Medical Education at its December meeting. The CMEAC emphasized that these proposals apply to the PRA Program and not to activities of the AMA as an ACCME accredited provider.
AMA PRA Category 1 credit is now authorized for the following activities and will be accepted on an application form for the PRA:
- Authoring an article published in a peer reviewed journal (i.e., journals listed in the Index Medicus): 10 credits for each article, 1 article per year. For credit, attach a reprint of the first page of the article to the application.
- Presenting a poster designated for AMA PRA Category 1 credit: 5 credits per presentation, 1 presentation per year. For credit, attach a page from the program with the abstract and identification of the presenter.
- Presenting a lecture designated for AMA PRA Category 1 credit: 2 credits for each hour of lecture, a maximum of 10 credits per year. Two AMA PRA Category 1 credit hours for preparation and presentation of each hour of new and original material designated for Category 1 credit by an accredited sponsor, to a maximum of 10 credits per year. A program or announcement of an activity will be acceptable as proof of the teaching activity.
- Achieving and maintaining a specialty board certification: 25 credits For credit, attach a copy of the certificate or the notification letter from the Board.
- Earning a medically-related degree, such as a master's in public health: 25 credits For credit, attach a copy of the diploma or transcript to the application.
