Program Description
Our bachelor of science degree program in medical biotechnology takes two years (five semesters) and begins in the fall. Three-year (seven semester) extended curriculum options are also available.
The junior year of the program provides a strong foundation in medically-related science courses such as molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, and genetics.
In the senior year, medical biotechnology students spend time in internships, in which they gain research experience under the supervision of a faculty research mentor in an academic or industrial laboratory. Internships may take place in the academic research laboratories of the faculty of the College of Graduate Studies, SUNY Upstate Medical University, Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., Syracuse NY, or the Masonic Medical Research Laboratory, Utica, NY. Graduates are eligible to take a national registry exam.
In addition to preparing students for the traditional job opportunities in medical biotechnology, the B.S. program also provides a good foundation for medical school, graduate school in medically-related sciences, and schools for physicians assistant. Some graduates may also elect to pursue careers in laboratory supervision, education of medical technology/medical biotechnology students, or industrial sales of laboratory products.
