Mus2

Frame 2 Slide 96 (Monkey duodenum, H&E). This is a slightly higher power view of the wall of the duodenum. The lumen of the organ is lined by the mucosa (m). Above the mucosa is the submucosa (sm), which consists primarily of connective tissue. In this micrograph, one can see portions of Brunner's glands (b) that are characteristic of the duodenum. Above the submucosa is the muscularis externa (me). This coat consists of inner circular (c) and outer longitudinal (l) layers of smooth muscle. Outside of the muscularis externa lies the serosa, which is largely destroyed in this section. In the upper left corner of the micrograph is a small section of pancreas (p).
