Upstate's Cancer Programs have been accredited by the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer, a distinction awarded to very few hospitals in the US. University Hospital is the only hospital in CNY to receive this distinction.

The Upstate Cancer Research Institute

In an instant, a cancer diagnosis can derail dreams.

It doesn't have to. Keeping patients' dreams alive and on course is the ultimate mission of the Upstate Cancer Research Institute, an integral, discovery-focused complement to the Upstate Cancer Center.

Upstate’s Cancer Research Institute has several dozen laboratory teams focused on the elusive behaviors of cancer cells—how they multiply, migrate, mutate and die. For these scientists—many working on projects funded by the National Institutes of Health—the Upstate Cancer Center represents a priceless connection to clinicians and patients, whose questions and concerns provoke new lines of exploration and could lead to new treatments.

Upstate University Hospital also offers the largest number of clinical trials available in the region. At any given time, cancer patients have access to approximately 150 new treatment protocols offered in conjunction with the nation's leading clinical trial organizations.

Academic medical centers, like Upstate Medical University, are complex institutions, charged with moving medicine forward through our three missions: research, education and clinical care. Regardless of our individual interests—as scientists or surgeons, nurses or technicians—our first and foremost obligation is to our patients. We believe that when patients come first, and families are part of the team, we all win—and medicine marches forward.
