The adult Hematology/Oncology services at SUNY Upstate Medical University are provided on an inpatient basis at University Hospital and on an outpatient basis at the Regional Oncology Center, Syracuse and at satellite offices listed below. Services are provided to patients from a 15 county radius around Central New York. There are 11 doctors on staff who are board certified in Hematology, Oncology or both. The physicians are supported by Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists, Social Workers, Case Managers, specially trained Registered Nurses and other support staff.

Clinical Services

Clinical services include state of the art care to patients with hematology and cancer diagnoses. Specialized care includes a multi-disciplinary approach to hemophilia care, neurologic-oncology services, urologic-oncology services, thoracic-oncology services, allogeneic and autologous bone marrow transplant services (www.universityhospital.org/cancer/clinical/autogolous.cfm) and therapeutic apheresis.

Clinical Research

Clinical Research is funded through the Cancer and Leukemia Group B cooperative group, the National Hemophilia Foundation, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and various independent pharmaceutical companies. Basic research is funded through grants from organizations such as the Department of Defense, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Disease, Immunization Products Limited, the National Cancer Institute and the Veterans’ Administration.

Education

The Hematology/Oncology teaching program exposes students, residents and fellows to all facets of the specialties. Teaching occurs on the inpatient units, the Regional Oncology Center and the VA Medical Center. The division offers a wide array of teaching conferences such as protocol conference, tumor board, journal club and various multi-disciplinary conferences such as Oncology/Pathology conference, x-ray conference and Heme/Path conference. Fellowship candidates are encouraged to do clinical research and case presentations. Basic research exposure is available for candidates who are interested.
