Nipple Sparing Mastectomy (NSM)

NSM is a type of mastectomy (removal of the breast). The incision is usually located at the inframammary fold or laterally, and is usually smaller than with a traditional/simple mastectomy thus preserving both the nipple and areola. It's used in the setting of breast reconstruction.

Skin-sparing mastectomy (SSM)

SSM is a type of mastectomy (removal of the breast) where the skin envelope is preserved. The nipple and areola are removed. The incision is usually located around the areola, and is typically smaller than with a traditional/simple mastectomy. It's used in the setting of breast reconstruction.

Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT)

Upstate Cancer Center offers intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) for select patients with early-stage breast cancer. Breast intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) provides clinicians with the option to perform radiation therapy in the operating room at the time of surgery.
