Program Benefits
The department provides various benefits and educational resources for each resident. Residents receive the standard SUNY Upstate Medical University benefits for Graduate Medical Education trainees. Those include full health & dental plans, malpractice insurance, life insurance, and retirement options.

The following are benefits provided to all anesthesia residents by the department:
- 5 paid meeting days per year and 20 vacation/sick days per year (per the American Board of Anesthesiology, residents can take a total of 60 vacation days throughout their residency)
- Society memberships: New York State Society of Anesthesiologists (NYSSA), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and International Research Society (IARS
- Journal subscriptions – “Anesthesia & Analgesia” and “Anesthesiology”
- Internet access (extensive collection of electronic journals and books that can be accessed from home)
Continuing Medical Education Support
The Anesthesia Resident Continuing Medical Education Support throughout residency training is an approximate total of $6,000/resident:
- Written Board Review Course – All CA-3 residents are sent to an annual written board review course paid for by the department (Approximately $3,000)
- Education/Book allowance – CA-1: $300 CA-2: $600 CA-3: $1,000
- All CA-1 residents are provided with the following textbooks in addition to their education/book allowance:
- Clinical Anesthesia Procedures of the Massachusetts General Hospital (Hurford)
- Pharmacology and Physiology in Anesthetic Practice (Stoelting)
- Anesthesia & Co-Existing Disease (Stoelting)
- Clinical Anesthesia (Barash)
- Anesthesiologists Manual of Surgical Procedures (Jaffe)
- Fundamentals of Airway Management (Patil)
- CA-2’s & CA-3’s receive the following books in their respective year:
- CA-2: Peripheral Nerve Blocks: Principles & Practice (Hadzic)
- CA-3: Big Blue (Jensen), Anesthesiology: Problem-Oriented Patient Management book (Yao & Artusio’s)
- Rotation specific lending library
