How to Apply

National Resdency Match Program (NRMP) Positions

We recruit for 11 advanced positions per year. While we don't officially offer a prelim year, we have close relationships with the Department of Surgery and the Department of Medicine who are always willing to interview our anesthesia candidates. If we know ahead of time, we can certainly schedule the interviews back to back.

Residency Candidates

Currently, we require completion of a PGY-1 year of residency at an accredited United States institution prior to beginning a PGY-2 year at Upstate Medical University.

The preliminary year can be satisfied by any of the following disciplines:

  • Internal Medicine
  • General Surgery or Surgery Subspecialties
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Pediatrics
  • OB/Gyn
  • Critical Care Medicine
  • Neurology
  • Family Practice
  • Transitional Year

The preliminary year is the only US clinical experience we require for foreign medical graduates. There is a 5-year cut-off date from medical school to present. We no longer sponsor H Visas. J Visas are at the discretion of the recruitment committee.

We would welcome your application for a CA-1 (PGY-2) position beginning in July 2009 at our institution. We will be considering applications only through ERAS and will be continuously reviewing applications through December 31. A successful candidate has USMLE scores in the 80s (pass on first attempt) with excellent reference letters. The following is a list of materials necessary for a complete application through ERAS:

  • Medical School Transcript
  • USMLE Transcript or COMLEX
  • ECFMG Status Report
  • Dean's Letter
  • Personal Statement
  • Reference Letters (3)
  • CV
  • Universal Application
  • Photo (optional)

The ERAS applications are reviewed upon receipt. If a candidate meets the above requirements, they are contacted via email about an interview.

The Interview Day

This year, we will interview a total of 80-100 candidates. Most of the interview days take place on either a Friday or a Saturday, October-January. We have found that weekends work well for medical students who are traveling from farther away.

You will have a tour of the hospital , the OR's and an informational presentation about our program. Each candidate has five 15-minute interviews with an anesthesia attending. Lunch is provided and there are residents available throughout the interview day for you to ask any questions.

In February, the selection committee determines the final ranking and submits the list to NRMP.

Accommodations

There are hotels within walking distance to the hospital and they also provide shuttle service to and from the hospital. Some of the hotels offer a discounted rate to medical students.
